Signs You Need Sports Performance Anxiety Treatment

Mental health struggles affect athletic performance. Here's how athletes describe performance anxiety, depression, and burnout:

"I dominate in practice, but freeze up in competition. My body won't cooperate when it matters most."
"Pre-game anxiety is unbearable. My heart races, I feel nauseous, and negative thoughts take over before I even compete."
"The perfectionism is exhausting. One mistake and I mentally spiral for days. I can't let anything go."
"My inner critic is brutal. Even when I win, the voice in my head says I'm not good enough or I just got lucky."
"Being the only Black athlete on my team is isolating. The racial stress and microaggressions drain me before I even step on the field."
"I'm completely burned out. I used to love my sport, but now it feels like a burden. I don't know if I can quit, though."
"Everyone expects me to perform at a high level—coaches, parents, teammates, scouts. The pressure is crushing me."
"I'm terrified of letting people down. The fear of failure controls everything I do in competition."
"My entire identity is wrapped up in being an athlete. I don't know who I am without my sport—and that scares me."
"Recovering from this injury has destroyed my confidence. I'm scared I'll never perform at the same level again."
"Depression makes it hard to even get out of bed. How am I supposed to train and compete when I feel this empty?"
"I compare myself to everyone. Social media makes it worse. I feel like I'm never doing enough."

Our Team
At Intentional Therapy PLLC, we specialize in culturally-attuned, non-traditional therapy for BIPOC individuals, particularly those from South and East Asian backgrounds. Founded in March 2021 by Parthi B. Patel, a first-generation South Asian American, our practice understands challenges like bi-cultural identity struggles and intergenerational trauma. "We’ve created a space where you don’t have to explain your culture—our therapists ‘just get it,’ because we’ve lived it." We have since expanded to include other mental health professionals, each with unique areas of specialization, allowing collaboration for individuals, couples, families, and organizations.
